Wine on the table.Wine, Bresse poultry and Charolais beef

The département of Saône-et-Loire lies right south of the Côte d’Or. Wine production is a big part of life here as well. The area under vines is larger than on the Côte d’Or. While the Côte de Nuits and the Côte de Beaune vineyards cover 9 200 hectares the vineyards of the Mâconnais and the Côte Chalonnaise cover 10 900 hectares.

East of the vineyards, bordering on the Jura, is the Bresse, famous for its poultry. The Bresse chickens have had their own AOC since 1957 and the regulations are strict.

The southwestern corner of the département, the Charolais and the Brionnais, is the home of the Charolais cattle. Known for its high quality beef the Charolais breed has spread all over the world. Some 200 years ago it was only bred in this part of France. Today it is present in close to 70 countries.

Up in the northwest you find a part of the Morvan Regional Natural Park. Autun, just outside the park, was founded by Roman emperor Augustus and is the birthplace of Nicolas Rolin, founder of the Hôtel-Dieu in Beaune.

Right in the middle of the département is Le Creusot. Together with the neighbouring towns and villages it has played an important role in the industrial development. Both steel production and mining have been important for the area since the late 18th century.
